I used a dragon to symbolize wildfires on this set of climate catalog cards—threatening, hungry, and not easily defeated. Worsening wildfires, however, are no fantasy.
I wanted a dragon that looked like a forest on fire. My visual research started with various reptiles and birds. I found the bearded vulture and flying fox to be the most suitable references, given their red and brown coats and predatory builds.
I iterated on head and neck variations, pushing and pulling characteristics of snakes, birds, and lizards. The dragon is adorned with charred brown horns and rigid quills lining its neck and back like a broken stick.
